The Story of Joseph (Yusuf عليه السلام)

The Story of Joseph (Yusuf عليه السلام) — From the Well to the Throne

Under the warmth of a father’s love, a young boy dreamed a dream — “O my father, indeed I saw eleven stars, the sun, and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me.” His father, Yaqub (Jacob عليه السلام), knew this was no ordinary dream. It was the mark of destiny — but destiny, like gold, must first pass through fire.

Yusuf’s brothers, consumed by jealousy, plotted against him. One day, they led him into the wilderness and cast him into a deep well, his cries fading into darkness. They returned to their father with a bloodstained shirt, pretending grief. But Allah was with Yusuf — even in the depth of the unseen.

A passing caravan found the boy and sold him into slavery in Egypt. In the house of Al-Aziz, Yusuf grew into a man of beauty and wisdom. Yet trials continued — the wife of Al-Aziz desired him, but he said: “I seek refuge in Allah.” When he refused her, she accused him falsely, and Yusuf was imprisoned, though innocent.

In the prison’s gloom, he continued to call people to Allah. Two cellmates came to him with dreams — one to serve wine, the other to be executed. Yusuf interpreted both with divine wisdom. Years later, when the king himself saw a troubling dream — seven fat cows eaten by seven lean ones — none could interpret it except Yusuf. He was freed, honored, and made a minister.

Famine spread through the land, and Yusuf’s brothers came to Egypt seeking food. They did not recognize him, but he knew them. Through patience and mercy, he reunited the family that once betrayed him. When his father arrived, blind from grief, Yusuf placed his shirt over his face — and sight returned by Allah’s will.

Then, the dream of his youth was fulfilled — his parents and brothers bowed before him in respect, and Yusuf said:

رَبِّ قَدْ آتَيْتَنِي مِنَ الْمُلْكِ وَعَلَّمْتَنِي مِن تَأْوِيلِ الْأَحَادِيثِ ۚ فَاطِرَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ أَنتَ وَلِيِّي فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ ۖ تَوَفَّنِي مُسْلِمًا وَأَلْحِقْنِي بِالصَّالِحِينَ
“My Lord, You have given me of sovereignty and taught me the interpretation of dreams. Creator of the heavens and the earth, You are my Protector in this world and the Hereafter. Let me die a Muslim and join me with the righteous.”
Surah Yusuf (12:101)

From the darkness of a well to the majesty of a throne — Yusuf’s life became a reflection of faith, patience, and divine timing.
