The Veil of Light

There is a light inside the heart that only stillness reveals — and a veil that only heedlessness builds.

What the Veil Is

The Prophet ﷺ said: "When the believer commits a sin, a black spot appears on his heart. If he repents, his heart is polished." (Ibn Majah). The heart, in this hadith, is something that can be covered — which means it can also be uncovered. The veil is not made of wickedness alone. It is made of distraction, noise, and the ten thousand small choices to look away from what matters. It accumulates so gradually that most of us do not notice it until we try to pray and find ourselves speaking words that do not reach the chest.

"Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth." — Surah An-Nur, 24:35

The Poem

In the stillness of the heart's deep night,
where whispers of the soul take flight,
a single flame begins to glow —
the light that only stillness shows.

The veil is woven thread by thread
from every thought left unexamined,
every moment rushed past without pause,
every prayer said without cause.

Yet underneath the layers lies
a knowing that never fully dies —
the fitra, the original face,
still turned toward its original place.

The Fitra

Allah says: "So direct your face toward the religion, inclining to truth. The fitra of Allah upon which He has created all people." (30:30). Fitra is the innate disposition — the factory setting of the soul — oriented toward tawhid, toward the One. The veil does not destroy it. It covers it. And what is covered can be uncovered.

You do not need to manufacture a feeling of nearness. You need to remove what is covering the nearness that is already there.
